Former Maryland Cop Accused Of Trying To Infect Rape Victim With HIV

A former police officer from Maryland has been indicted on 11 counts after he allegedly raped a woman during a traffic stop and tried to infect her with HIVMartique Vanderpool, 30, is accused of pulling over a female motorist last September when he was an officer with Fairmount Heights Police Department. Vanderpool and another officer took the woman into custody and called a tow truck to take her car to the impound lot.

When Vanderpool got the police station, he "demanded the victim engage in a sex act or be arrested." The woman complied with his demand, and while he did not arrest her, he still wrote her several traffic tickets. He then drove the woman to the impound lot where she picked up her vehicle.

Officials began investigating the traffic stop and discovered that Vanderpool has HIV. When they learned about the rape allegations, they contacted the woman and she was provided with preventative medication. Authorities are trying to determine if he had sex with other women.

"This conduct creates in me concerns that we have other people that may have been impacted, whether as the victims of crime or in relationships with the individual in question. If you have those concerns, please contact that number," Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said.

Vanderpool resigned from the police in November and was arrested in December. The charges against Vanderpool include first- and second-degree rape, having sex with a person in custody, attempting to transfer HIV, and misconduct in office.
