A convicted human smuggler is sentenced to federal prison. This week, Cuban citizen Jorge Alfredo Rodriguez was sentenced to three years behind bars in Brownsville. The sentencing is for his conviction on human smuggling charges after his arrest in 2018. He and several accomplices were involved in a scheme to smuggle into the country 86-illegal immigrants the smugglers kept hidden behind pallets of a load of avocados in a tractor trailer. Rodriguez, who was driving the truck, was caught after a Department of Public Safety trooper stopped him for a moving traffic violation and found the immigrants in the trailer.
